Abstract: | Choreographer Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker and composer Steve Reich are intrigued by similar principles of composition in which structures become processes during performance. Both use repetition of motives, while subtly shifting their interlinking as well as the relationship among performers, requiring a concentration on the here and now wherein time and space seem to conflate for both performers and audiences. In this article I suggest the relevance of an analysis of music and dance that exceeds the structural for a better understanding of de Keersmaeker’s early set of four pieces, Fase (1982), which, I argue, has an impact on the audience through the affective intensities it creates. |
