Item Type: Book Section
Abstract: This essay discusses perceived psychological connections between the art of Alchemy and the art of the Outsider Artist. Throughout the essay the psychology of Carl Gustav Jung (1875-1955) will be used to frame the discussion in order to reveal psychological similarities between the imagery, processes and practices of alchemy and that of the artist outsider. Fundamental to this exercise is the desire to articulate the psychological value of different modes of perceiving the world in relation to both cultural and a-cultural factors, and to explore Jung’s unique contribution to our understanding of art and culture within the modern era
