Are western universities institutionally racist?

Pilkington, A. (2012) Are western universities institutionally racist? Paper presented to: Seventh International Conference of Interdiscipinary Social Sciences, Universidad Abat Oliba, CEU, Barcelona, Spain, 25-28 June 2012. (Unpublished)

Item Type: Conference or Workshop Item (Paper)
Abstract: The presentation takes as its starting point the Macpherson report's claim that public organisations in the UK are institutionally racist. The presentation explores this question in relation to universities. While it is argued that universities cannot usefully be conceptualsied in these terms, nonetheless universities are typically characterised by a norm of whiteness. Revealingly, few changes are evident in this regard over the last decade
