Midgelow, V. (2007) A little fleshy philosophy: dance improvisation as research. Paper presented to: Improvisation Continuums Conference, University of Glamorgan, Pontypridd, Wales, 12 April 2007. (Unpublished)

Item Type: Conference or Workshop Item (Paper)
Abstract: Have you ever considered the morphology of the body whilst jumping? Have you ever experienced the process of becoming whilst spinning? In this performed paper, in which I alternate between movement improvisation and a discursive dialogue, I investigate the nature of dance improvisation, seeking out multiple embodiments to chart improvisatory performances as ‘Practice as Research’. Teasing out the topography, and indeed the corpography, of the artist/academic nexus in improvised dance performance to present a case for an ontology of the body in which theory is embedded in the improvised practices of the dancing body in a conscious, embodied and critical manner
