Changing the script

Lumsden, E. (2015) Changing the script. Invited Keynote presented to: Beautiful Minds: Nurturing and Promoting Mental Wellbeing in Children and Young People, Birmingham, 05 October 2015. (Unpublished)

Item Type: Conference or Workshop Item (Invited Keynote)
Abstract: Presentation Overview The importance of quality experiences in the early years brings rewards that are life long and inter-generational. However, inconsistencies in care, maltreatment, poor nutrition and the lack of safe, nurturing and supportive environments which facilitate well-being and learning impact adversely on the life course. As Sally Davies (Chief Medical Officer, England) stressed in her foreword to 1001 Critical Days: Those who suffer multiple adverse childhood events achieve less educationally, earn less, and are less healthy, making it more likely that the cycle of harm is perpetuated, in the following generation. Increasingly the role of maternal mental health on young children’s outcomes has come to the fore. This presentation will: • Provide an overview of the changes in early years • Provide overview of challenges and why we have to take action • Highlight the importance of collaborative working • Challenge the audience to think about how they can work differently to ‘Change the Script’.
