Archives, art and text - 'I dream of home': constructing an archive of the intangible

Leet, S.-K. (2014) Archives, art and text - 'I dream of home': constructing an archive of the intangible. Paper presented to: Anthropology and Photography Conference, British Museum, London, 29-31 May 2014. (Unpublished)

Item Type: Conference or Workshop Item (Paper)
Abstract: This paper presented a photography project that collated images contributed by individuals which symbolize for them the idea of ‘home’. Exploring this approach in relation to ethnographic archives, issues around visual representation, personal narratives and contexts were explored. These include the use of the archival format and approach in contemporary art-making, specifically in comparison to historical uses of the ethnographic archive and its reference to a scientific, objective study. Because the subject of my work on ‘ideas of home’ is entirely subjective and refers to both the real and imaginary, in addition to the locating of ‘home’ in specific places, the archive of images produced reflects an attempt to visualize states of mind that are informed by lived experience, memory and fantasy.
