Abstract: | A 4.8 metre corridor incongruously juts out over Regents Canal, East London, through the window of an office building, and crosses the boundaries of Hackney and Tower Hamlets. Accessed only through Ombra's window one has to sign a disclaimer before being allowed on to the structure and precariously out over the canal. Allowing only one person at a time, the structure un-nervingly slightly creeks and sways. There is a feeling of daring and adventure that is enhanced by the over engineered, DIY appearance of the structure, and that one has to clamber up the steep steps, onto the bar, and then crouch through the small window aperture, to reach the ultimate viewpoint. "Viewpoint", Russell Bamber's latest sculpture, entices the viewer to dice with danger, and re-assess their perspective, physically, intellectually and conceptually. The viewer is teased into the experience, and encouraged by the playfulness of the high gloss colours in which "Viewpoint" is clad. Climbing onto, through and into "Viewpoint" makes space for a few rare seconds of silence and contemplation, where, at the same time, you are exposed to the elements, the constant cacophony of activity and become the focal point. |
