Abstract: As computing and information technologies become ever more pervasive the costs of energy used by our computer systems are increasing, both in monetary terms and in terms of environmental impact. It is no surprise, therefore, that a great deal of interest is shown in devising strategies and techniques that would support a greener IT infrastructure and a more efficacious use of our computer systems. This paper highlights some of the work that is being carried out in this area with a specific emphasis on the role of the Higher Education sector. The paper discusses the leadership role of higher education in preparing students by providing them with the knowledge, understanding and skills to achieve a greater environmental sustainability in computing and IT infrastructures. A proposal, based on computing curriculum design and delivery, is presented.
