Abstract: | What is the connection between the notorious figure of Grigory Rasputin and contemporary politics? Focusing on the idea of "lost causes", ideology and democracy, this article engages with the thought of Slavoj Zizek. In particular, it explores the ambiguous role that today's "democratic subversions" play in the reproduction of capitalism as a power totality. Finally, the article addresses Zizek's emphasis on the four main sites of global antagonism (ecology, intellectual property, bio-genetics and the new forms of social apartheid) and argues that we should draw into consideration a fifth site of antagonism: the drive of capital itself. |
