Abstract: In this chapter, we suggest that in the last two decades, the process and possibility of educational transformation has been articulated and politicised in a very particular way, in many parts of the world, through what we term Transformational (with capital ‘T’) policy discourses. In the chapter, we outline some characteristics of Transformational policy discourses, as exemplified some recent national programmes of school (re)building and (re)design. The main body of the chapter reflects upon research exploring one policy programme of this kind: the UK Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme. In effect, the chapter contrasts the explicitly Transformational promise of this programme versus how it unfolded in practice in everyday spaces of education.
