Abstract: The chapter examines the contexts and rationales of the study of children’s spaces and actions in western society. The chapter explores and discusses the following areas: 1. Children in the contexts of childhood: construction, destruction or co-construction? 2. Why do early years’ workers and others need to know and understand about the spaces and actions of young children? 3. Learning about knowing and understanding children. 4. Domains in which knowledge and understanding about children are developed. In conclusion, the chapter offers questions for reflection and a short recommended reading list for practitioners wishing to explore further practical features of child study.
