Abstract:	Specific Replant Disease (SRD) is a chronic global issue that is reported to affect species of the Rosaceae by reducing their growth and vigour, and may result in death. The loss of rosaceous trees in the UK alone is estimated to be £1 million per year. Methyl bromide (MeBr) was the chosen treatment until its revoke as a pollutant in 1993. With an Integrated Pest Management approach coming to the forefront of EU legislation, this research looks into the potential of a Novel Green Manure (NGM) as an alternative treatment. In vitro experiments demonstrated the fungistatic properties of this material against Rhizoctonia solani and Pythium ultimum. In a bioassay involving four hundred Sorbus aucuparia (Rowan) trees, “diseased” soil and sterile loam was amended with the NGM at three concentrations using fresh material (5g, 25g, 45g). The experimental period ran from 2012 until 2014, with destructive and DNA analysis thereafter. Trees planted in diseased soil amended with 45g of NGM resulted in a greater mean dry weight than those in diseased soil. This was not an effect of added nutrients. DNA results demonstrated an elimination of one or more pathogens which is seen in relation to asymptomatic plants. This research points towards the benefits of using NGM.
