Thirty years of monitoring surface change on Namib dunes

Livingstone, I. (2012) Thirty years of monitoring surface change on Namib dunes. Paper presented to: Biennial Conference of the Southern African Association of Geomorphologists, Gobabeb, Namibia, 08-12 September 2012. (Unpublished)

Item Type: Conference or Workshop Item (Paper)
Abstract: Studies in the Namib Sand Sea have provided important information about the dynamics of individual dunes, and much of this information has been central to a wider understanding of the geomorphological development of global sand seas. Following an overview of single-dune studies in the Namib, this presentation will concentrate on the repeated surveys that have been carried out since 1980 at two sites on Visitors’ Dune, a complex linear dune approximately 8 km south-east of Gobabeb. These surveys provide clear evidence that the dune is active and that its morphology changes in response to variability in the seasonal and annual wind climate
