Abstract: | This paper outlines the main features of the three-year European Commission sponsored HANDS (Help Autism/Diagnosed Navigate and Develop Socially) project on the use of mobile technology for children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). After locating the use of the new mobile technology within an emergent field of research and practical pedagogical application, and after reviewing the state of research on technology for autistic children, the paper devotes more space to the description of the theoretical and technological innovative aspects of the HANDS toolset. The paper concludes with a number of reflections on the lesson learned so far in carrying out the research. |
