Abstract: Background: Little is known about the experiences of unaccompanied asylum seeking children (UASC) during what is imagined to be a difficult and possibly dangerous journey from their home country. This project explored the journey and experiences unaccompanied children face pre, during, and post migration. Methods: Qualitative research, in the form of semi structured interviews and thematic analysis was undertaken with five refugees and two foster carers. Findings: Six interconnected themes were identified; (1) The decision to flee, (2) Children negotiating and navigating their way through dangers faced during their journey, (3) Facing neglect and discrimination in the UK; the journey continues, (4) Forms of agency and support, (5) On-going struggles, and (6) Fulfilling dreams and building a home. Discussion These themes revealed the severe adversities children face. However, children also show great agency and resiliency when negotiating their way to safety, and go on to have successful futures. This research will provide a rich understanding of the experiences UASC face at all stages of their journey and permit psychological, social and educational provisions to better meet their needs.
