| Abstract: | This paper traces late modernist developments in abstract painting leading to the current post-modern cultural position. Throughout this enquiry, the intention is to present a case for the importance and preservation of a sense of ‘otherness’ within the arts – where ‘otherness’ is seen as a container for depth experience touching on the numinous and the spiritual. Connections are made between the sense in which Rudolph Otto (1918) used the term ‘otherness’ to refer to the numinous and to the position of certain contemporary thinkers and artists who also seem to be articulating a position based on a numinous sense of ‘otherness’ |
