Abstract:
The aim of this research is to define and conceptualize donation based food supply chains (DBFSC) in developed countries in order to firstly consider their mode of operation, and secondly critique the factors that have influenced their development. These factors include food insecurity, food poverty, food price volatility and policy drivers to reduce food supply chain waste. The review has then informed the design of a developed economy DBFSC model that fills a current gap in the academic literature and provides a rationale for further research in this area on the challenges associated with donation based food supply. This paper is of value to those seeking to undertake further academic research in this area and provides a valuable perspective for the food industry and charitable organizations regarding the flow and the challenges associated with donated food and provides a valuable insight to policy makers seeking to develop policy instruments and mechanisms to address food waste.
