Abstract:
We chose a recent Chinese acquisition in the UK as a case study to explore capability upgrading in emerging economies multinational enterprises’ (EMNEs) acquired subsidiaries in developed countries and factors that influence the upgrading outcome. The results confirm significant capability upgrading in the subsidiary and therefore challenge the orthodox view that upgrading can only happen in developing countries. In addition, evidence suggests that the upgrading outcomes are affected by the EMNE parent firm’s competences, degree of subsidiary autonomy and subsidiary mandates.
