Abstract: It is nearly 90 years since Francis Peabody gave his landmark lecture on the care of the patient (Peabody, 1927). Peabody was concerned that the science of medicine was marginalising its central role of caring, and famously concluded that ‘‘the secret of the care of the patient is in caring for the patient’’.
