Abstract: This paper discusses the performance of two active damping control strategies in mitigating the vibration of a synchronous Free-Piston Stirling Engine/Linear Alternator over a wider bandwidth [47-53] Hz to amplitudes below 20µm. A simplified vibration model of the Stirling engine generator is justified on the basis that the response of the proposed model is verified to match well that of the real one. Two active control techniques are discussed and analyzed in the time and frequency domains. The first control strategy is based on a Feed-forward zero-placement control whereas the second one is linear quadratic (LQ) optimal control and state observer.
