Abstract: This paper takes a critical discursive and feminist perspective on psychological accounts of children who live in situations of domestic violence. Academic, popular and professional discourses around domestic violence tend to represent children and young people as passive witnesses and victims - as individuals who watch, who suffer from and who are damaged by the violence (e.g. Rivett and Howarth, 2006; Spilsbury et al, 2007). Our study explores the operation of discourses of damage in young people’s accounts of living with domestic abuse, as well their construction of counter discourses of agency, ability and capacity. This paper reflects on the methodological opportunities and challenges encountered in working with young people through individual interviews, and individual and group based photo voice processes, to explore their accounts of domestic abuse. In particular we explore the complexities of working with children to articulate perspectives that are often unvoiced in contemporary culture.
