| Abstract: | Issues surrounding the management of solid waste have moved to the front of the public agenda in recent years, with levels of concern and activity by citizens and governments worldwide reaching unprecedented levels. New waste management techniques are being developed in response to this concern, but many are in their infancy and are not proving to be economic in the UK. This situation will need to be addressed and remedied if scarce landfill resources are to be preserved and if the focus of the waste industry is to shift towards more environmentally friendly (or sustainable) waste management strategies This article describes some of the policies and strategies that have shaped waste management practices in the UK and, by drawing on the opinions of professionals in the public and private waste industry (collected in the summer of 1996), assesses the impact of these on the industry's future development and direction. |
