| Abstract: | The Labour Government's Sustainable Communities Plan was a deliberate attempt to address the key issues of supporting growth in the South East region of England as a means of stimulating national and regional economies, alongside a set of neo-liberal beliefs in the potential impact that could flow from the market (and house builders in particular) when combined with active state support for planning and infrastructural development. Harsh realities of economic recession have made it impossible for the (not so beautiful) dream to be realised, and the notion of supporting existing communities to be 'sustainable, or creating wholly new 'sustainable' communities, appears to be as distant as ever. This presentation and accompanying paper is the latest in a series of presentations from the ESRC project researching the nature of 'sustainable growth' in the MKSM area |
