Abstract: The use of community volunteers to act as critical friends to young people identified as being at risk of exclusion from schools was investigated in order to assess its impact. Data collected from mentors, young people, teachers and parents was analysed in order to gain insights into the efficacy of an initiative put into place in a local authority in England. The results indicate improved attitudes towards schooling, improved school attendance and a reduction of sanctions used through disciplinary procedures with the sample students
