This editorial contextualises the term ‘applied arts and health’ and the need for a new journal to assist in the evidencing of practices within the field. The issue of what constitutes evidence within arts practices is raised as an area of future interrogation. Building on historical understandings of the benefit of arts to health, this editorial foreshadows future commitments to the field and introduces the contributors to this inaugural international publication.
