Abstract:

The world is facing numerous challenges ranging from economic crisis to climate change, and at the same time it needs to meet the increasing food and nutritional needs of a growing population with limited natural resources. Aquaculture and fisheries make a significant contribution to the global food security of a large number of the world’s population. This paper looks at global fisheries production and its contribution to food security, community livelihoods and the national economy. Aquaculture is the fastest growing food production sector in the world, contributing almost 50% of global fish food supply; the sector has developed at an impressive rate over the past decades. It has helped to produce more food fish, kept the price of fish low, and made food fish and seafood more accessible to many communities around the world, whilst productivity is highly stressed from capture fisheries. All over the world hundreds of aquatic animals and plants species, a wealth of genetic diversity, are now farmed under a variety of systems; from the small subsistence plot to the very large commercial operation: providing food, health and wealth, fuelling economic growth and sustaining livelihoods for its adopters.
