Inclusion in Sultanate of Oman

Background: The Sultanate of Oman is moving towards providing inclusive education for children with disabilities, however, at present children on the autism spectrum are not included in this provision. This research explored the existing barriers for providing appropriate services for children with autism and their families and how services could be improved. Methodology: The research included multiple methods to gather the views of parents and professionals working in the field. 56 questionnaires were completed by professionals working in the field of education and social development. 37 interviews and focus groups were conducted with parents and professionals across the country along with 14 visits to different centres to observe current practice. Results: The results indicate that there is limited understanding of the autism spectrum in the country. Limited or lack of services was a main concern not only in educational provision, but also in terms of diagnostic services, family support and post-school opportunities for individuals on the spectrum. Limited awareness of autism and lack of trained staff makes it especially difficult for individuals on the spectrum and their families to enjoy good quality of life and to be part of their community. Conclusions: There is a need for the government to develop a more co-ordinated approach to support people with autism and their families and to develop the knowledge of local professionals. A strategic plan detailing the next steps to take has been submitted to the government of Oman.
