Abstract:
This chapter will use Emilo Gentile’s re-thinking of the sacralisation of politics and his definition and application of civil religion in order to explore the extent to which the accelerated institutionalisation of the collective remembrance of the Holocaust, often in relation to broader Nazi era atrocities, can be perceived as a form of civil religion for liberal, Westernising states, particularly but not exclusively in Europe in the 1990s and 2000s.
