Abstract:
This paper is based on my PhD research project investigating the lived experience of mothers living with a child with glue ear/otitis media (OM), a condition causing intermittent hearing loss. This qualitative project uses a combination of Photovoice and Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Participants reflect on their experiences of living with a child with long term OM to produce images which they describe and discuss. The descriptions are analysed using IPA to identify themes. The focus of this paper is on the experience of mothers interacting with medical and educational professionals as they seek to have their voice heard and ensure the best outcome for their child.
