Abstract:
In the context of a conference about the loss of country houses in Britain and Ireland, this paper explored the idea of loss in a more general sense. It argued that, by viewing the country house as a site of consumption, we are able to recover 'lost' goods, processes and people. These ideas were explored through detailed examples, mostly drawn from the English Midlands.
