Abstract:
Mansfield has always had an ambivalent reputation in New Zealand, largely due to her status as an expatriate diasporic writer and her early death. Her famous stories about New Zealand are both canonical yet somewhat oblique to the national literary tradition, maintaining a shadowy yet abiding presence. This paper examines the new wave of scholarship on Mansfield in relation to the New Zealand context, and the marketing, production and reception of her writing with reference to the cultural climate, both past and present. In identifying recent responses to her work, it considers what the new understanding of Mansfield will offer to critical readings and interpretations of her national significance.
