  Abstract:
This chapter examines the concept of in/authenticity in Chuck Palahniuk’s work, specifically his novels Survivor, Haunted and Lullaby. Through the use of cultural theory it explores how these texts engage with what it means to be authentic or ‘true to oneself’ in a contemporary American landscape dominated by the distorting artificiality of pervasive cultural forces such as the mass media and advertising.
