Finding the Words: How Reflective Writing Reveals Counsellor Identity Development in Training

Trainee counsellors often undergo profound shifts in how they understand and articulate their professional identity. This study explores how those shifts are reflected in the language of reflective writing. Studying the writing of early-stage and late-stage counselling trainees (N=37), we examined how participants described counselling and whether this changed across groups. Using content analysis, we identified four core developments in later-stage reflective writing: increased confidence in tone, more embodied identification with the counsellor role, broader and more specialised counselling vocabulary, and greater complexity in how the function of counselling was described. Early-stage reflections were often tentative, self-focused, and marked by passive observational language. By contrast, later reflections included confident statements like “I will” and “my client,” professional terms such as “containment,” “attunement,” and “hold space,” and active verbs that reflected relational empowerment rather than detached technical processes. The writing of early-stage trainees described counselling as something passive and external where late-stage trainees positioned themselves actively within the therapeutic relationship. These findings suggest that reflective writing can both reflect and support identity development, offering valuable insight for educators and supervisors into the role integration of future practitioners.
