Abstract:
The Northamptonshire Prisons Collection held at Northamptonshire Archives Service contains documents which were produced during the 19th century by the legal bureaucracy of the time. These records show the criminal justice system at work. Examples of some of the documents produced are the folder of remissions with royal signatures, dated between 1815 and 1878 (reference: NP/1/8). Two individual cases which received these remissions are the 1827 case of John Edwards and the 1831 case of John Coles. These cases provide accounts for those individuals found to be ‘insane’ before the establishment of Northampton General Lunatic Asylum (currently St. Andrew’s Hospital) in 1838. This article will demonstrate the insights that can be extracted from legal documents held within the Northamptonshire Prisons Collection. Furthermore, it will showcase how these documents can also be used in conjunction with other documents on parish and institutional levels to be able to trace the life course of individuals being processed as part of the legal system.
