Corporate Investors' Exploitation and Plunder in the Democratic Republic of Congo : The Illusion of Development amidst Minerals Extraction

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) sits at the epicentre of the global rush for critical minerals essential to emerging technologies, particularly cobalt and lithium, which power electric batteries and renewable energy solutions. However, beneath the promise of sustainability and technological advancement lies a grim reality – one where multinational corporations (MNCs) systematically exploit and plunder the country’s vast mineral wealth while perpetuating human rights abuses, environmental destruction, and institutional corruption. This chapter critically examines the role of MNCs in the DRC, highlighting their reliance on exploitative labour practices, and their strategic circumvention of national laws through bribery and regulatory capture. Furthermore, the chapter explores the intersection between corporate malfeasance and state complicity, where local authorities, often influenced by corporate lobbying and bribery, fail to enforce labour protections and environmental regulations. This lack of oversight allows MNCs to operate with impunity, extracting immense profits while leaving behind environmental devastation, economic disempowerment, and human suffering. This study argues for stronger regulatory mechanisms, enhanced enforcement of corporate accountability standards, and greater international cooperation to ensure that businesses uphold ethical practices rather than perpetuate neocolonial exploitation.
