Abstract:
‘Phygital Palimpsest’ results from an interdisciplinary exchange between fields of contemporary drawing practice, archaeology and significantly an interplay and fusion with digital archaeological spatial technologies. The ground breaking imagery born from this process combines physical analytical drawing studies of trowelling actions, combined with photogrammetry and GIS (Geographic Information Systems), supported by Dr John Pouncett, Spatial Archaeologist, University of Oxford. The artwork was created over a five year residency based at an archaeological excavation site in Bodfari, north Wales in conjunction with site manager Professor Gary Lock, University of Oxford. The artwork, 'Phygital Palimpsest' was shortlisted and was a prize winner (People's Choice Award - Global Public Vote) at The Lumen Prize, Global Award for Art and Technology. Presented at the Barbican Centre, London and Exhibited at the Cello Factory London. The selectors included: Ben Vickers, Serpentine Gallery; Louise Lawson, Tate Gallery; Irini Papadimitriou, FutureEverything; Fei Jun, Media Lab, CAFA Beijing; Foteini Aravani, Museum of London; William Latham, Goldsmiths University
