Abstract:
The primary objective of stakeholders in construction projects is to ensure successful completion within scope, time and budget. Despite their importance, limited research addresses how construction management can effectively address and integrate the resolution of conflicts and disputes. This research critically examines conflicts and disputes in the Qatari construction industry and analyses factors and methods to improve their management. Using a mixed methods approach, the research triangulates qualitative interviews and quantitative surveys to develop a functional framework for managing stakeholder disputes and conflicts, focusing on the relationship between clients and contractors. The research begins with a literature review and industry overview, followed by exploratory qualitative interviews with 15 participants to identify key themes. A quantitative survey (104 responses) explores these themes in greater depth, while a second round of 10 qualitative interviews refines the framework through detailed validation. The findings provide new insights into the nature of conflicts in the Qatari construction industry and present a series of frameworks that are useful for both theory and practice. This research also provides practical checklists, "Tool of Lists 1-4," to assist stakeholders in project planning and conflict avoidance and highlights shortcomings in existing conflict management mechanisms. This research makes a theoretical contribution by developing a holistic, forward-looking functional framework for conflict and dispute management in construction. In practice, it highlights the importance of proactive conflict management strategies, comprehensive contract development, clear role delineation and tools such as BIM and Dispute Resolution Boards (DRBs). It also addresses limitations and suggestions for future research, providing a foundation for academics and practitioners to improve dispute resolution practices in the construction industry.
