Abstract:
The UK economic recession 2008/09 resulted in a rise of unemployment and unexpected changes to household income. Prevalence estimates of poor mental health in relation to financial hardship tend to be identified by focussing on unemployed individuals and debt. This paper reports the findings of cross-sectional online UK survey (n = 953) which explored prevalence estimates of ‘emotional distress’ (i.e. depression, anxiety and stress) in individuals who experienced changes to their work status or income or contacted a national charity with the aim of getting advice and support. Correlation and regression analysis were used to relate mental health to other psychosocial factors and health behaviours (social support, emotion regulation, diet, physical activity). The results show a high prevalence of ‘emotional distress’ symptoms for individuals who experienced ‘loss of hours’ at work and/or income, demonstrating the importance of re-constituting the meaning of financial hardship to better capture the effects of the economic recession.
