Suspension systems under seismic excitations

Kaczmarczyk, S. (2017) Suspension systems under seismic excitations. Invited Presentation presented to: CIBSE Lifts Group Annual Seminar 2017, London, 01 November 2017.

Item Type: Conference or Workshop Item (Invited Presentation)
Abstract: Lift systems are susceptible to damage when a building is subjected to strong earthquake motions. The counterweight - guide rail and car guide rail systems particularly suffer from earthquake-induced vibrations. The most common mode of failure is counterweight derailment. This paper reviews the dynamic phenomena and presents a robust model to study, to predict and to mitigate the effects of the seismic responses of guide rail, counterweight/ car suspension systems.
