Abstract: Background: Autism is found across different cultures and yet there is little understanding of what the implications of culture are in developing social and communication skills in individuals on the spectrum. Rationale: This presentation is based on some of the existing literature and research on the subject and will explore how culture can influence preferences of the individuals and their family members and its implications for practitioners. Main points: The main points of the presentation will be exploring the cultural interpretations of characteristics associated with individuals with autism and its implication in selecting and developing appropriate social skills. Issues such as assessment and provision of services for multi-lingual children with autism will also be discussed. Conclusions: The current provision for people on the spectrum and their families coming from the non-dominant cultures is often lacking and with most countries in Europe becoming multicultural, it is important that measures are taken to improve the services to provide culturally appropriate support for individuals on the autism spectrum.
