| Abstract: | Seasonal movement between London and the country house is a well-recognised aspect of the lives of wealthy British landowners. Yet surprisingly little attention has been paid to ways in which this affected the material culture and character of each property owned by a family. This paper explores in detail the ways in which the Mary Leigh split her time between her ancestral home, Stoneleigh Abbey, and her suburban villa, Grove House in Kensington Gore. It reveals the country house to be a base for social and economic power and a source of goods for her London home, but also a place used for entertaining friends and a key element of her construction of family and lineage. |
