Abstract:
Waste management systems are inherently spatial in character, enabling detailed geospatial analysis to determine optimum facility types and locations based on specified criteria. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have been utilised in previous studies looking at treatment facility siting. However, a research gap was identified in evaluating optimal siting for a full range of treatment facility types based on Multiple-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) methods. An English county; Northamptonshire; was used as a case study. A recently developed methodology is applied to produce opportunities and constraints maps for each technology grouping. This paper presents initial research results and discussion of GIS application given uncertainties of mapping based on forecasting methods. The paper further suggests possible impacts on waste system modelling of waste prevention initiatives on arisings (e.g. significant reductions in overall tonnages).
