Abstract: | Exhibition as part of the PHYSICAL PAINTING project. Herbert Read Gallery Canterbury and Grandes Galleries de L’ESADHaR, Rouen. 2013. Curated by Cherry Smyth and Jost Münster. Herbert Read Gallery, Canterbury, UK / Grandes Galeries de l’ESADHaR, Rouen, France, 2013. Texts by Uwe Derksen & Thierry Heynen, Cherry Smyth, Dominic Rhatz, Maxence Alcalde, Moyra Derby, Lucile Encrevé, Stephen Wilson, ESAD HAR/ UCA. French/English The PHYSICAL PAINTING project recognises the inability of images to reveal the extent of our relationship to landscape and questions the hierarchy of the senses that has resulted in the current dominance of image in contemporary British culture. The works in the PHYSICAL PAINTING project operate as a critique to this situation. Through 'archaeological thinking', the project proposes an alternative experience for the viewer to enable a deep understanding of landscape and our place in it--a traditional theme of much British landscape-based art--is only possible if we are capable of moving beyond surface appearance and image. |
