Abstract: | This keynote lecture considered approaches to the study of consumption in the english country house. It argued that traditional concerns with status and fashion based explanations of elite consumption should be tempered with a consideration of the role of heritance and lifecourse, both of which played a large part in structuring elite practices and motivations. |
