Abstract:
When Benedeit translated and edited the Latin Navigatio sancti Brendani into Anglo-Norman, he excised many of the liturgical scenes; however, he expanded many scenes with fantastic and marvellous imagery. One scene in particular was the episode where Brendan encounters Judas Iscariot where the latter receives a day of respite from hell. Judas describes his weekly round of tortures in graphic details. These descriptions are drawn on torture practices that were used at the time to create a truly horrific vision of hell
