'We always come here': investigating the social in 'social learning'

Powis, C. (2010) 'We always come here': investigating the social in 'social learning'. Paper presented to: University of Northampton Learning and Teaching Conference: Learning Dialogues, University of Northampton, UK, 13 May 2010. (Unpublished)

Item Type: Conference or Workshop Item (Paper)
Abstract: The project will centre on exploring why students choose a particular place in which to learn. Social learning space is defined as the ‘third space’ outside of home and teaching environments – typically buildings like the library, IT Centre or Restaurant but also including other informal spaces where students choose to gather to work. We particularly wish to explore the social and emotional reasons behind student choices of where to gather and work. The student researcher would be involved in gathering, analysing and presenting qualitative data – designing and undertaking interviews with a representative sample of students and presenting findings at a conference
