The torturer's "art" in the Judas episode of Benedeit's Voyage of St Brendan

Mackley, J. S. (2007) The torturer's "art" in the Judas episode of Benedeit's Voyage of St Brendan. Notes & Queries. 54(1) 0029-3970.

Item Type: Article
Abstract: When Benedeit translated and edited the Latin Navigatio sancti Brendani into Anglo-Norman, he excised many of the liturgical scenes; however, he expanded many scenes with fantastic and marvellous imagery. One scene in particular was the episode where Brendan encounters Judas Iscariot where the latter receives a day of respite from hell. Judas describes his weekly round of tortures in graphic details. These descriptions are drawn on torture practices that were used at the time to create a truly horrific vision of hell
